This afternoon JEF inaugurated their upcoming campaign titled ‘This Year, Your Europe’ to the general public. Present at the meeting were several MEPs and candidates from all 3 main political parties.
JEF president Christopher Scicluna kicked off the campaign by explaining that this year JEF did not want to remain passive and explained that the title was meant to show that these elections happen only once every 5 years with the aim to bring the needs of the electorate closer to the EU institutions. The ‘i’ of ‘This’ is also replaced by a person to highlight the ‘personal’ nature of the upcoming elections.
A short video was then presented encouraging students to go out and vote. The video takes a jibe at prominent British MEP and Eurosceptic Nigel Farage by showing a youth posting ”Giving up won’t solve problems, your vote will!” on his Facebook page.
Vice- President Cristina Cefai then proceeded to explain the events that will take place for the duration of the campaign. The campaign will kick-off with a debate between the leaders of the 3 main local political parties at Sir Temi Zammit Hall which will be open to all students on a ‘first-come-first-served’ basis.
This will be followed by a series of seminars and mini-debates which will be topical. Another debate will be focused on a ‘hot topic’ which is yet to be determined. Moreover, JEF Malta are also going to host a wine night and establish a blog so as to increase exposure.
Each MEP present was then allowed to give a short statement with most praising the initiative and calling for the campaign to include more organisations both on campus and on the national scene.
